Tai Chi for Health Newsletter
Tai Chi news and views - for Tai Chi students in East Sussex
Welcome to the Summer edition of your
newsletter.
And a special welcome to all new students and
readers this
month.
Now the weather's warmer it's easier
to take
10 minutes outside to practice
occasionally...the best advice is to practice
little and often rather than a lot
infrequently - though any Tai Chi is better
than none!
Our Summer & Autumn Term classes are now
booking for Ringmer, Newhaven and Lewes, so
please
call 01273
470955 or book directly
online if it's easier (details below).
Details of all courses are below...the
Beginners
Course is already starting to fill, so please
book by the end of August at the latest if
you'd definitely like a place.
If you have any suggestions, or questions
about Tai
Chi or
our classes, please feel free to send them
in or ring
Paul, Bekki, Katie, Amy or Marcus on 01273
470955. And if you'd like to
contribute to this newsletter, we'd love
to hear
from you.
Whether you are a new student, a continuing
student or a student returning
after some time off, we hope you have a
lovely summer,
and look forward to
seeing you at one of our classes in the
coming term.

1. Tai Chi World Record Attempt
On the 25th July at 11.00am, Tai Chi
instructors across the country will be
running a multi-location Tai Chi lesson to
try to break the world record for the largest
Tai Chi lesson ever - 40,000 people!
The Biggest Ever Tai Chi Event is working
with WOMAD, the World Music of Art and Dance
Music festival in Wiltshire. Andy Spragg and
Denise Coster will be on stage at WOMAD at
this time taking the WOMAD festival visitors
through their paces in the lesson. This is
where your instructor Paul will be too, so
regrettably there won't be a Lewes or
Newhaven contingent participating...however,
there'll be plenty of other opportunities to
help break the world record across East Sussex!
These Tai Chi lessons will be open to both
beginners and experienced players. Each
person is asked to donate £1, so if you
taking part please visit uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/hereforbreakthrough
If you would like to take part but aren't
registered yet, find a local Tai Chi club in
Brighton or elsewhere in Sussex, and ask them
if they are holding a session for this event.
If they are then you can join in there. If
they aren't, they may be interested in
joining in?
To join in and hold a Tai Chi session or if
you are looking for a Tai Chi club please
contact Andy Spragg on
andy.spragg@re-vitalise.co.uk or visit www.re-vitalise.co.uk
2. Tai Chi Anniversary
Prof. Cheng Man Ching would have been 108
years of age on 29th July 2010.
3. World Tai Chi Day - feedback
To mark World Tai Chi Day, we had a free
Tai Chi session in Grange Gardens one Sunday
after Easter in April.
It wasn't so warm back then, so thanks to
everyone who came along for the free outdoor
class.
Hope to see you at the next one - and
don't forget to tell your friends about our
indoor and outdoor classes!
Tai Chi with Horses - one more course this
Summer
Tai Chi with Horses, a new and exciting way
to learn about body awareness, takes place at
a farm in
Ringmer, East Sussex on Monday 12th July at
11.00am. It is
believed to be the only one of its kind in the
world.
Tai Chi improves balance, posture and focus.
Participants feel more grounded, more
self-aware, more connected with the earth and
nature, more able to withstand life's little
knocks and 'go with the flow'.
Horses demonstrate self awareness at its
finest. These animals are constantly living
in the present moment, moving around in their
herd. They often have to move out of the way
of one another at a moments notice. They do
this with ease and grace on different
terrains due to their own self awareness, and
we can learn from them.

Where to find your pair
Just loose comfortable clothing is all
you really
need
to start Tai Chi. Eventually, however, you
may like to
obtain the canvas-soled Tai Chi shoes that we
wear
in class. They are fairly inexpensive, and
can be worn
comfortably around the house as well as when
practising. The Costume Store at 16 Station St,
Lewes (above Equilibrium Health Centre) sells
them, at £7.50 a pair. They can also be found at
Yum
Yum's
supermarket in the North Laines, Brighton
though they are more expensive there.
If you are planning a trip to London, there
are shops
in Chinatown which sell them for £6.95 a
pair
(turn left out of Leicester Square tube and
head into
Little Newport St). Occasionally they can be
picked
up at street markets for even less than this
(though
they tend to be seasonal). Make sure you try
them
on first if possible, as sizing is not always
100%
accurate.
Tai Chi training shoes are also available
online at
shops such as Wushu Direct (from £7.50 plus
£4.95 p&p) -
please see link below. If you find another local
retailer
selling Tai Chi
shoes, please tell us and we'll include
details in the
next edition.
We look forward to
seeing
you soon. Enjoy your practice! Meanwhile,
here are some useful links for keeping in
touch or finding out more about Tai Chi.
